Storing your specimen collection: humidity, light, dust
How to keep a mineral collection from degrading over years and decades.
A serious mineral collection lasts longer than its collector. Whether you're keeping a single shelf of specimens or a cabinet of museum-grade pieces, basic environmental controls make the difference between specimens that look the same in 20 years and ones that decay.
Light
Different minerals react to light differently:

Light-sensitive minerals (fade with prolonged sunlight exposure):
- Amethyst — strong sunlight over years causes fade
- Rose quartz — same; some material is particularly sensitive
- Topaz (especially imperial topaz) — significant fade risk
- Pearls — bleaching with UV
- Some opals — dehydration
- Realgar — actually decomposes in UV
- Light-insensitive: most quartz family except above, all hardness-7+ silicates, sulfides, most carbonates
Strategy: ambient indoor lighting is fine for everything except light-sensitive specimens. For those, indirect light or shaded display.
Humidity
Humidity extremes affect:
- Very low humidity (under 30%): can cause certain minerals to dehydrate. Opal in particular — extended low-humidity exposure can cause "crazing" (network of fine cracks) that's irreversible. Selenite (gypsum) and other water-bearing minerals also at risk.
- Very high humidity (over 70%): promotes deterioration of sulfides (some pyrite specimens), can encourage mold on organic-included specimens, can cause water-soluble minerals to slowly dissolve
Strategy: aim for 40-60% relative humidity. Most homes naturally maintain this range. If you live in a very dry climate, a small humidifier in the display area helps.
Dust
Dust dulls polished surfaces over time and can scratch them if rubbed off without care.
- Display in enclosed cabinets or vitrines for premium specimens
- For open shelves, dust monthly with soft microfiber cloth or compressed air
- Never use household cleaning products on specimens
- For delicate specimens (zeolites, fragile crystals), use a soft camel-hair brush
Temperature
Most minerals are temperature-stable in normal indoor conditions. Avoid:
- Direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces)
- Direct cold (windowsills in winter)
- Rapid temperature changes (can cause thermal shock in delicate specimens)
- Attic or basement storage if temperature swings widely
Cabinet construction
If you're building or buying a specimen cabinet:
- Glass doors keep dust out and let you display
- Adjustable shelving (specimens come in many sizes)
- Acid-free or sealed wood — old plywood can off-gas formaldehyde that affects some pyrite and other sulfides
- Felt or microfiber under specimens — protects polished bases
- Labels visible — your collection's value depends on documented provenance
Labeling
Each specimen needs a label with: species, locality (as specific as possible), collector/dealer, date acquired, weight. A separate inventory card or database is essential for serious collections.
